I am currently recruiting for a small company that has been writing industry-leading software for the Water and Environmental sectors for over a decade. Building on strong recent performance they are looking to recruit a new team member to help them expand. The current role is for a junior developer to join the team responsible for their flagship product.

This product is a cloud-based, remote data capture application that runs on a variety of mobile devices. The mobile device solution is a cross-platform, hybrid JavaScript application built using Ionic. The device app communicates with a RESTful Web API written using Microsoft .NET. Desk-based users interact with the system using a browser-based Angular management portal that handles work assignment and reporting activities.

They are a small team and are looking for an eager junior developer who is keen to learn and work with all aspects of the system. Duties will include diagnosing and fixing bugs in addition to adding new functionality. Working on the device app, the browser-based client and the server-side system components. The successful applicant can expect to get hands-on with the cloud-infrastructure in Amazon Web Services where necessary.

The role will also involve some client-facing activities, mostly in the form of regular project update calls and implementation activity carried out via remote connection. However, on-site work may be necessary from time to time so the ability to travel to customer sites (mostly in the UK and continental Europe) would be beneficial.

The developers are a key part of the customer support process at, so as part of this role the successful candidate will join our out-of-hours weekend stand-by rota along with the rest of the team.

As a growing small business, the successful candidate must also be prepared to tackle problems outside the bounds of a purely technical role. As the company grows there will be great scope to define your own role as well as influencing the direction of the organisation as a whole and its products.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The role will initially be hybrid working based part time at our Cambridge site.
  • Reporting to the lead developer.
  • Contributing to maintaining and extending the codebase according to standard operating procedures.
  • Responsible for producing and maintaining thorough supporting documentation.
  • Regular customer-facing project and support work involving occasional client-facing on-site work at customer premises around the UK/Europe.
  • Will be involved in testing and quality activities.
  • Will be involved in regular product/customer support work.
  • Will have extensive opportunity to influence design and architecture decisions.
  • Will be expected to join the out-of-hours weekend support rota

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 1 years’ experience with a .NET language (VB or C#) and Visual Studio
  • At least 1 years’ experience with JavaScript, ideally in using Angular
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming principles
  • Experience of SQL Server and/or Oracle databases

Beneficial but not Essential

  • Experience with Amazon Webservices (EC2, RDS, S3) and/or Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with mobile development, ideally with the Ionic framework for cross-platform app development
  • Experience with GIT source control system
  • Experience in with Agile Development (e.g. SCRUM or KANBAN)
  • Experience with TDD and unit testing frameworks (NUnit, Jasmine/Karma etc.)
  • Experience with a continuous integration environment (we use Ionic AppFlow, TeamCity and Octopus Deploy)
