Delivering a Trust-Wide Training Programme for Oracle Cerner EPR
Read how we were able to support University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust through successful system rollout and beyond.
The Challenge
University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust was undertaking a major digital transformation project, implementing Oracle Cerner as its new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system.
To support such a significant rollout, the Trust required a team of experienced EPR Trainers who had both the technical knowledge of Oracle Cerner and hands-on experience delivering user-focused training in an NHS setting.
With over 13,000 end-users needing to be trained in advance of go-live, this was a large-scale undertaking with tight deadlines and a need for highly specialised skills.
Due to our long-standing track record in supplying Oracle Cerner EPR specialists to NHS organisations across the UK, we were enlisted to help and we were able to respond swiftly and confidently to the Trust’s requirements.
The Objective
The goal was to ensure every system user – from clinical staff to administrative teams – was fully trained ahead of the planned October 2023 go-live date. Training needed to be accessible, effective, and tailored to varied user needs across the organisation.
Key objectives included:
- Delivering comprehensive, end-user training to over 13,000 staff
- Supporting readiness for a Trust-wide EPR go-live
- Ensuring consistency, confidence, and competence in system usage
- Maintaining training continuity, despite evolving project timelines
Although the original go-live was scheduled for October 2023, configuration delays required the Trust to push this back to June 2024, adding an additional layer of complexity to the training schedule.
Our Approach
Using our existing network of proven professionals – many of whom had delivered similar programmes via IT Works previously – we ensured the Trust had access to high-quality specialists who could hit the ground running.
We sourced and placed:
- 1 EPR Training Manager
- 4 Training Leads
- 19 Trainers
The training team was initially engaged from August 2022 for a 13-month period. When the revised go-live date was confirmed, we mobilised the same team to return in February 2024, delivering refreshed training ahead of go-live and remaining in place through September 2024 to support post-live optimisation and system stability.
- 13,000
- Users Trained
The Results
The Trust went live with Oracle Cerner in June 2024 with confidence and clarity. Thanks to the work of the dedicated training team, staff across the Trust were well-prepared and supported throughout.
Key outcomes:
- Over 13,000 users successfully trained
- Training programme completed in line with evolving timelines
- Effective re-engagement and refresher sessions delivered ahead of revised go-live
- Smooth post-go-live support through stabilisation and optimisation phases
The scale and success of this engagement is a reflection of the Trust’s forward planning, and of our ability to deliver reliable, high-quality teams across all stages of a digital implementation.
