Strengthening EPR Capability at North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust
North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust delivers mental health, learning disability, and specialist services across the North Midlands.
As part of its digital transformation journey, the Trust relies on the Lorenzo EPR system to underpin safe, effective, and joined-up clinical care.
The Requirement
Faced with a significant resource gap and a time-sensitive project, the Trust approached IT Works Health for help. Having worked with the wider market before, they were aware of our strong track record in sourcing highly specialist digital health professionals, particularly those with expertise in the Lorenzo platform and Clinical Documentation Capture (CDC) development.
The Trust required urgent external support to accelerate configuration within its Lorenzo EPR system. The primary need centred on the development and deployment of a suite of Clinical Documentation Capture (CDC) components – structured, dynamic input interfaces designed to improve how clinical data is captured, validated, and shared across services.
Main Objectives
This wasn’t a typical configuration task. CDC development within Lorenzo is highly specialist, with only a small number of contractors possessing the system knowledge, clinical understanding, and workflow expertise required. With limited internal capacity and a fixed 20-day timeframe, the Trust needed proven EPR expertise, and quickly.
The Trust aimed to deliver a defined and prioritised set of CDC developments within the 20-day window:
- 25 small-scale documentation configurations
- 10 medium-complexity CDC components
- 6 advanced developments incorporating more sophisticated clinical logic and validation
Crucially, these outputs needed to be functional, dependable, and able to add lasting value for clinical teams; enhancing both EPR usability and operational efficiency.
Our Process
Leveraging our deep network in the digital health contract market, we rapidly identified one of the few available specialists with a strong track record in Lorenzo CDC configuration. We facilitated a collaborative scoping session between the contractor and the Trust, where deliverables were agreed, priorities aligned, and project expectations clearly set.
This consultative and structured approach helped ensure the work began with clarity, pace, and shared understanding.

The Outcome
All scoped CDC developments were delivered on time and within the agreed 20-day schedule. These components are now live within the Trust’s Lorenzo environment, supporting day-to-day clinical documentation activities with improved accuracy, consistency, and ease of use.
This outcome demonstrates the value of targeted EPR support - where the right expertise, applied at the right moment, can meaningfully improve clinical systems, empower frontline staff, and support wider digital maturity goals across NHS settings.
