Clinical Coder

 

We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Clinical Coder to join the Clinical Coding Team at a NHS Trust. The post holder will be responsible for translating complex clinical information from patient records into accurate diagnostic and procedural codes using national coding standards.

Accurate clinical coding supports the Trust in delivering high-quality patient care, service planning, and financial reimbursement through Payment by Results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Extract and analyse clinical information from patient case notes and electronic health records.

  • Assign accurate diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classification systems.

  • Ensure coding is completed in line with NHS Digital National Clinical Coding Standards.

  • Work closely with clinicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify documentation where required.

  • Meet coding accuracy and productivity targets set by the Trust.

  • Participate in internal and external clinical coding audits.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the Clinical Coding department.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) including English and Maths.

  • Knowledge of clinical terminology, anatomy, and medical procedures.

  • Experience working with healthcare records or clinical information.

  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.

  • Good IT and data entry skills.

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Desirable

  • Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC) from NHS England.

  • Previous experience working as a Clinical Coder within the National Health Service.

  • Knowledge of NHS data systems such as PAS or EPR systems.
