We are hiring an Operational Database Administrator (ODBA) to join Optum. This role is responsible for the end?to?end management of enterprise database environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and compliance. You’ll handle installation, configuration, upgrades, backup and disaster recovery, while proactively monitoring and tuning databases across multiple environments and data centers. Working closely with application, infrastructure, and integration teams, you’ll support 24×7 operations and ensure all database platforms meet HIPAA and organizational security standards.

Primary Responsibilities:
· Install, configure, upgrade, and patch enterprise database environments
· Manage database performance, availability, capacity planning, and tuning
· Perform backup, recovery, and disaster recovery testing; document recovery procedures
· Implement and monitor automated backup schedules (daily, weekly, monthly)
· Troubleshoot replication, performance, storage, and reliability issues
· Maintain database security, roles, access controls, and audit logging
· Conduct proactive health checks, log reviews, and system monitoring
· Support environment refreshes, upgrades, and hardware migrations
· Maintain operational runbooks, configuration documentation, and support guides
· Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and integration teams
· Support multiple data centers, virtual environments, and on call rotations (24x7)
· Ensure compliance with HIPAA and organizational security standards
Required Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
· Epic ODBA certification
· Proven solid database administration or data engineering experience
· Proven solid Linux/Unix administration experience (RHEL, SUSE, or CentOS)
· Proven experience with database performance tuning (queries, indexes, system parameters)
· Proven experience troubleshooting replication and high availability environments
· Familiarity with virtualization and storage platforms (VMware, SAN)
· Proven programming or scripting experience in at least one language (Python, Java, .NET, C++, etc.)
· Proven solid analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, and collaboration skills
· Willingness to work U.S. business hours, support multiple time zones, and participate in a 24x7 on call rotation
Preferred Qualifications:
· Proven hands on experience with backup/recovery tooling and DR testing (e.g., Rubrik or equivalent)
· Proven scripting or automation experience (Shell, PowerShell, Ansible)
· Proven experience administering InterSystems IRIS / Caché environments
· Proven Epic database administration experience (Chronicles, Clarity, Caboodle)
· Proven experience supporting Epic upgrades, patching, environment refreshes, and DR testing
· Demonstrated familiarity with Epic operational tools (e.g., TADR, System Pulse)
· Proven experience supporting healthcare EHR environments and workflows
· Proven exposure to HealthShare / Ensemble / IRIS integrations
· Proven experience with SQL Server or Oracle for reporting environments
· Proven cloud or hybrid DR experience (AWS, Azure)
· Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare compliance and clinical workflows
