Application Specialist

Role Overview

As a Pathology Applications Specialist, you will play a key role in the successful delivery and optimisation of Order Communications and Clinical Management System (OCMS) solutions across NHS and healthcare organisations.

Working closely with customers, project teams and technical specialists, you will support the design, configuration, integration and implementation of pathology applications, ensuring solutions are delivered to the highest standard and align with clinical and operational workflows. You will be instrumental in enabling digital transformation programmes that improve laboratory efficiency and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver and support the implementation of Order Communications and Clinical Management System (OCMS) solutions across pathology services.
  • Act as the functional application specialist throughout the project lifecycle, providing expertise in system design, configuration, integration and implementation.
  • Configure and optimise clinical workflows to meet customer requirements and best practice.
  • Collaborate with project managers, technical specialists, integration teams and customer stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Support interoperability between OCMS, LIMS, EPR, PAS and other healthcare applications.
  • Assist with system configuration, data validation, testing (UAT), training and go-live activities.
  • Troubleshoot application issues, escalating risks and complex incidents where appropriate.
  • Provide post-implementation support to ensure successful adoption and ongoing optimisation.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and contribute to project governance activities.
  • Support product enhancements by identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and sharing customer feedback.
  • Deliver user demonstrations and training sessions to clinical and operational teams.
  • Travel to customer sites across the UK as required to support implementations and customer engagement.

Skills & Experience

  • Experience implementing or supporting Pathology Order Communications (OCMS) or clinical applications within healthcare.
  • Strong understanding of pathology workflows and laboratory operations.
  • Healthcare application implementation or support experience.
  • Knowledge of healthcare interoperability, including HL7 and FHIR messaging standards.
  • Experience integrating clinical applications with LIMS, EPR, PAS and related healthcare systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clinical, operational and technical teams.
  • Patient, empathetic and customer-focused, with an understanding of the pressures faced by healthcare professionals.
  • Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to manage changing priorities across multiple projects.
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to continually develop technical knowledge and professional skills.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites throughout the UK.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience within NHS pathology or laboratory services.
  • Experience delivering digital pathology or laboratory informatics projects.
  • Exposure to project delivery methodologies such as Agile or PRINCE2.
  • Understanding of clinical workflow optimisation and healthcare digital transformation programmes.
